Nature is my source of inspiration. As a child, I would spend all my free time in the outdoors, fishing and hunting. The smell of wet leaves and the damp earth are revisited each time I open a bag of clay. These past memories along with todays experiences are the inspirations of the artwork I create.
All of my pottery is stoneware, gas fired to over 2400 Fahrenheit in a reduction atmosphere. By limiting the glazes to only the inside surfaces of my vessels, I retain the integrity of the natural clay. Thus, the surface texture is pleasing to the touch, as nature would provide. The white slip applied provides an interesting contrast from the dark clay body in which I render my images upon. Each piece is then stained with an iron oxide to enhance these drawings and provide a warm rich feel to the clay.
By limiting the shape of my vessels to simple cylindrical forms or sculpting tile studies, I create a piece with clean lines that does not interrupt the detailed images, which are brought to the foreground of my artwork.
